Even high-quality dumbbell sets can become bulky obstacles in your home gym, especially when you’re tight on space. Adjustable dumbbells provide access to an entire dumbbell rack at a fraction of the space, says Prince Brathwaite, NASM-CPT, founder of Trooper Fitness. The best adjustable dumbbells are easy to use, whether you’re a novice or a seasoned athlete. They’re convenient, space-saving, and versatile, making them an excellent choice for working on your muscular strength and definition at home.

What to Know Before You Shop
As you dive into the world of adjustable dumbbells, you may feel overwhelmed by the variety of options. Adjustable dumbbells are available in a wide range of designs, materials, weight increments, and adjustability mechanisms. It’s essential to consider how each of these components aligns with your personal fitness approach and training goals.
- Design: The ends of a dumbbell, called the heads, should be sturdy and well-balanced so you can stay stable and safe while lifting. The handle should also rest comfortably in your palm, with a diameter and texture that support a strong grip.
- Materials: Pay attention to the materials used for each dumbbell, as they can also affect its performance and durability. Steel and cast iron are known for their longevity, whereas plastic-coated cement typically doesn’t hold up as well over time.
- Weight Increments: Adjustable dumbbells come in various weight ranges, and the actual weight increments can also differ. Consider your skill level and preferences to determine the weight range and increments that best suit your training needs.
- Adjustability Mechanisms: Some adjustable dumbbells feature a dial or pin for weight adjustments, while others require adding or removing extra weight plates manually. The former offers a quicker, more seamless workout experience, but its mechanisms tend to be less resilient over time than those of more analog options.
The adjustability mechanisms and weight ranges vary among adjustable dumbbells.

Traditional Dumbbells vs. Adjustable Dumbbells
Regular or standard dumbbells are individual weights sold in fixed increments, meaning you need to purchase multiple pairs for different workouts. Adjustable dumbbells have dials that let you adjust their weight. Since most weigh anywhere from 5 to 50 pounds, they allow you to try new exercises and lift heavier as your skill level increases without having to buy and store multiple sets of weights. Adjustable dumbbells can also be more cost-effective over time since you only need to invest in one set.

How We Tested
In our quest to find the best adjustable dumbbells, we first sought advice from personal trainers on which key features to consider when shopping. Then, we rigorously tested 47 pairs of adjustable dumbbells lifting a collective 50,400 pounds as we performed traditional weightlifting moves like bicep curls, bent-over rows, forward lunges, front squats, and bench presses. During testing, we evaluate each weight based on the following key criteria.
- Ease of Setup: Do the dumbbells come preassembled, or do we need to assemble them after unboxing? We record how long the setup process takes and whether it requires more than one person. We also note whether any additional tools are required or if everything is included in our purchase.
- Adjustability: First, we note the minimum and maximum weights of each dumbbell, according to the manufacturer. Then, as we use the dumbbells, we pay attention to how easy they are to adjust. Can we use one hand, or do we need both? We also time how quickly adjustments can be made.
- Ease of Use: Do the dumbbell handles feel streamlined and easy to grasp? Are the weights easy to maneuver into different positions? Does the length of the dumbbell’s handle interfere with our workout?
- Grip: How does the handle’s texture enhance or detract from our ability to grip the weights? Is it smooth and padded or rough and textured? How wide is the handle? Can hands of different sizes grasp it comfortably? During workouts, we note how secure the dumbbells feel in our hands. We also spray our hands with water to see how the grip changes with wet or sweaty hands and how it feels with jewelry, like rings.
- Durability: Do the dumbbells appear to be of high quality at first glance? We pay attention to how the materials feel and whether they seem sturdy and durable. Throughout testing, we monitor the dumbbells for signs of wear and tear, including scratches, dents, chips, and dings.
- Storage: How much space do the dumbbells take up? Do they come with a base, rack, or other storage solution? If so, we note whether the storage solution is well-made and how easy it is to use. These observations help us determine which adjustable dumbbells are best for smaller home gyms.
- Value: To accurately assess the value of each dumbbell, we wait to check the price until the end of the testing period, after we’ve evaluated them in all other key categories. Based on their performance, do we think the weights are priced fairly? Would we buy them at this price or only if they went on sale? We also consider whether we’d recommend the dumbbells to a friend or family member.

Adjustable Dumbbells We Also Tested
We tested 47 adjustable dumbbells, but only 12 earned a spot on our final list of recommendations. Although we liked some of these dumbbells’ features, they ultimately didn’t stack up against the rest.
- We previously recommended BowFlex’s SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells and BowFlex’s SelectTech 1090 Adjustable Dumbbells, but both of these dumbbells were recalled by the manufacturer due to an impact hazard on June 5, 2025. After hearing news of the recall, we worked quickly to remove both of these models from our list of recommendations. Read more about the recall and what to do if you own one of these dumbbells in this recall notice by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
- Bowflex’s Results Series 552 SelectTech Adjustable Dumbbells replace the recalled SelectTech 552 series and feature updated safety standards. We loved the convenience and 2.5-pound increment adjustability, but we found the adjustment dial was inconsistent, jamming frequently, and the dumbbell length at lower weights was awkward and bulky.
- Rogue’s Loadable Dumbbells with OSO Collars offer exceptional grip, even with wet hands. But the plates are sold separately from the dumbbells themselves, and we don’t like the difficulty of the adjustment mechanism.
- We like that LEADNOVO’s Adjustable Weights Dumbbells Set is budget-friendly. However, it has a limited weight capacity and is made of plastic parts that can break easily. We also noticed that the bar is too long, making exercises like bench presses awkward.
- We found Aviron’s Loadable Weight Set to be aesthetically attractive and versatile, with an excellent weight range. However, its time-consuming plate adjustments made supersets too difficult, and the large plate design obstructed key exercises like front squats and hip bridges.
- We also tested NordicTrack’s 55 Lb. Select-A-Weight Dumbbells and Xterra Fitness’ ADB25 Adjustable Dumbbells, but ultimately decided they weren’t worth including in our top picks.

What to Look For
- Fitness Level: If you’re new to strength training, we recommend adjustable dumbbells with a smaller weight range. As you progress, you can gradually increase the weight to ensure you’re consistently challenging and growing your muscles. Advanced lifters should look for heavier weights to help them reach their weightlifting goals. No matter your experience, consider a set of weights that caters to both your current fitness level and your goals.
- Training Goals: Select dumbbells that match your goals and align with your workout routine. If you want to build muscle, opt for heavier weights so you can push yourself while doing fewer repetitions. Lighter weights will help you complete more reps, which allows you to increase your endurance and tone your muscles.
- Available Space: Optimizing your home gym is crucial, especially if you have limited space. Before making an investment, consider how much space you have and where you can store your dumbbells, and be sure to measure.
- Price: Adjustable dumbbells can vary significantly in price. Brand, materials, and accessories can affect the cost of each set. Consider how the price factors into your overall budget and how it may impact the longevity of your purchase.
- Warranty: Many adjustable dumbbell brands offer warranties, typically ranging from one year to a lifetime. When purchasing adjustable dumbbells, choose a well-established brand that offers generous warranties and is recognized for its reliable customer service.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are adjustable dumbbells safe to use?
If used properly, good-quality adjustable dumbbells, like the ones listed here, should not pose any safety risks, unlike cheaper adjustable dumbbells that may pose more of a safety risk due to flimsy parts. Broggini recommends making sure their locking mechanisms are secure after adjusting the weight amounts before using them.
What is the best material for adjustable dumbbells?
Metals like steel and coated cast iron tend to be the best choices for extremely durable adjustable dumbbells with higher weight capacities. Rubber-coated or urethane-coated steel is ideal for those who need a quieter, floor-safe option with a comfortable grip.
Can you build muscle with adjustable dumbbells?
Yes, you can effectively build muscle and strength using adjustable dumbbells. Research shows that using free weights, such as adjustable dumbbells, supports movements associated with daily living, engages muscles that stabilize the body, and offers a diverse range of exercises for both the upper and lower body.
How heavy should adjustable dumbbells be?
When deciding which adjustable dumbbells to purchase, consider your experience level and whether anyone else will also be using them. If they’re a shared piece of equipment or you want to increase your weight over time, it’s best to get an option that ranges from light to heavy (about 4 to 100 pounds per dumbbell) so you have plenty of weight options to work with.
Are Bowflex Adjustable Dumbbells safe to use?
Bowflex SelectTech 552 and SelectTech 1090 Adjustable Dumbbells were recalled by the manufacturer on June 5, 2025. You can read more about the recall and what to do if you own one of these products in this notice. Bowflex’s SelectTech Results Series 552 and Results Series 1090 are the new replacements. We tested the Results Series 552, and while they didn’t perform well in our test, they are safe to use. We are currently testing the Results Series 1090 and will update this article once those results are in.
