The weekend is here, which means a fresh batch of movie and TV titles are in the queue. Whether you’re piling into the car on your way to the theater or piling onto the couch with your own snacks, there’s plenty to watch as a family.
Here’s your Family Watch List—fresh recommendations for the weekend of March 21.

- Released: In theaters March 21
- Rating: PG (Kids & Family/Adventure/Drama/Fantasy)
🎶 Hi ho, hi ho, it’s off to live-action we go. 🎶 Even those who might roll their eyes at yet another remake of a nostalgic animated title can’t deny their curiosity. Especially when there’s a vocal powerhouse occupying the lead roll of a musical.
This live-action reimagining directed by Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer, The Amazing Spider-Man) stars Rachel Zegler as the title character and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen in what should be an entertaining take on the classic tale.
‘Moana 2’
Courtesy of Disney
- Released: On 4K and Blu-ray on March 18
- Rating: PG (Kids & Family/Adventure/Musical/Fantasy)
Video On Demand (VOD) is nice and all, but if you’re a part of the physical copy club (Hi, fellow member! 👋🏾), you can look forward to grabbing a copy of Moana 2 for your shelf this week.
The sumptuous visuals should really pop on a 4K disk. Not to mention the movie is a pretty enjoyable continuation of the 2016 Disney hit. With Moana growing into her leadership roles with her people as well as her own little sister, there are plenty of good family themes to revisit at home, if you happened to miss its theatrical run.
‘Shifting Gears’ Season 1 Finale
Courtesy of ABC
- Aired: March 19 on ABC and the following day on Hulu
- Rating: TV-PG (Family Sitcom/Comedy)
Back in February, we got a bit of an inside look at how Shifting Gears has some good bones that could give it some staying power among fans of family sitcoms. While it has yet to officially get the green light for a second season, it has developed a strong following, particularly among those who love Tim Allen and Kat Dennings.
This show, about an estranged father and daughter working to repair their relationship has come a long way in season 1 and could have much further to go in future seasons.
‘Abbott Elementary’ Episode 18
Courtesy of ABC
- Aired: March 19 on ABC and the following day on Hulu
- Rating: TV-PG (Sitcom/Comedy)
If you haven’t been watching Abbott Elementary, you deserve a failing grade. Okay, maybe that was too harsh. How about a tardy slip for being late to class? This hilarious and heartfelt show created by Emmy® Award winner Quinta Brunson is entering the tail-end of its fourth season and has yet to hit a speed bump.
Centering a passionate group of educators at a Philadelphia public school, this show shines a light on the value of good teachers, good relationships, and family forged through shared experience. And thanks to sharp writing, it doesn’t shy away from tough, relevant subjects.
It’s a good time to hop on the train–or start from episode 1 and binge straight through. You’ll be glad you did.
‘Wicked’

- Streaming: March 21 on Peacock
- Rating: PG (Musical/Fantasy/Drama)
For those who just can’t get enough of Wicked (we loved it too), the musical extravaganza will be streaming exclusively on Peacock starting this weekend.
This Jon Chu-directed origin story of the most famous witches in Oz–though only part one–has all the magic that first drew fans to the stage-musical. But it also has some great gateway power for families who are new to the genre and the tale.
Part 2, entitled Wicked: For Good, won’t release in theaters until later this year. But at least streaming this one in the meantime shouldn’t have you loathing the wait.
